Freight Distribution

Slashing lead times and distribution costs for importers and local manufacturers
Freight distribution involves an intricate network of suppliers and transport service providers. Imported goods are often ‘handled’ by as many as five different parties before final delivery.

Our regional distribution centres can receive, collect and consolidate distribution freight, reducing costs and
lead times.

Provided to you through a single point of contact, our mix of bundled freight solutions can be configured to meet the unique requirements of importers, as well as local manufacturers, through a combination of:
  • Short haul for collection of freight and last-mile deliveries anywhere in the country
  • Cross-docking consolidation centres at all ports and over 35 hubs throughout South Africa
  • Daily, scheduled less-than-truckload or dedicated long-haul distribution to and from regional cross-docks
The Problem
Freight distribution is extremely complex. It involves large volumes of documentation, many physical handover points and an intricate network of suppliers and transport service providers. The quest for cost-reduction cannot be to the detriment of shorter lead times or flexibility. To make matters worse, there is a lack of real-time visibility across much of the inbound supply chain. Myriad players typically involved in the movement of freight make integrating a single IT system for end-to-end visibility exceptionally difficult. Security too is a major concern, particularly for importers. Research shows that cost and lead-time reduction, which in turn increases the ability of an importer or manufacturer to react to changes in demand, are two of the biggest challenges facing supply chain and logistics managers today. At the same time, it’s difficult to meet South Africa’s empowerment criteria without sacrificing the scale and flexibility a large but relatively less empowered service provider can offer. But supply chains account for 10% to 20% of most organisations’ total costs and transport makes up 50% of this cost. So a supply chain services provider who can reduce costs, shorten lead times and increase BBBEE procurement scores is the ideal partner.

Distribution Network
Spread across South Africa and located near the ports, our cross-dock/distribution centres can receive and collect freight from the ports, container handling agents or manufacturers. Freight is then consolidated according to final destination at our cross-dock/distribution centres. Utilising our less-than-truckload or fully dedicated capabilities, we can then line haul the consolidated freight, using cost-effective 30t vehicles, to any one of our 35 regional cross-dock facilities. The last mile is fulfilled by our short haul or courier/express parcel delivery capability, through which we reach more than 450 towns across South Africa on a daily basis. This invested network is unique, and has instilled cost reduction and speed as component parts of our DNA.
