Improving reactivity, cutting lead times and costs
Mining companies and suppliers are under pressure to build modern supply chains that can react to the vagaries of demand, geography and market prices.
Having warehouses positioned close to the supplier base as well as the mines facilitates rapid response to orders, reducing the number and cost of deliveries, shortening lead times and increasing safety compliance.
Our solutions can be configured and customised through a combination of:
- Short haul for suppliers to our centralised or regional consolidation centres
- Long haul to our regional cross-docks and shared warehouses
- Short haul from regional warehouses to the mines or mineshafts
While the logistics environment itself is fast-changing, the South African mining industry has been subject to even greater change over the last two decades. Today, many mining companies and suppliers find themselves dealing with out-dated logistics infrastructure in the absence of effective and comprehensive logistics services – locally and into the SADC. The mining centre of gravity has shifted. The rand costs of mining have spiralled upwards. Mining companies find themselves compensating for less-than-perfect demand planning by holding high inventory levels. However, globalisation, digitalisation and supply chain technology have enabled much progress logistically, and mining companies stand to benefit hugely from these developments.
Crossroads’ mix of bundled logistics solutions can be configured to meet the unique requirements of mining companies and suppliers, through a combination of:
- Short haul for suppliers to our centralised consolidation hubs
- Long-haul to our regional cross-docks/shared warehouses
- Shared warehousing in demand-heavy areas
- Short haul from regional cross-docks/warehouses to the mines or mineshafts
We already have the industry’s largest purpose-built cross-dock and line-haul solution out of Johannesburg and Cape Town. We plan to extend a similarly comprehensive solution, with regional cross-docks/warehouses, throughout Southern Africa.
Both mining companies and suppliers are under growing pressure to cut costs and drive up service levels, and to build modern supply chains that can react swiftly to the vagaries of demand, geography and market prices. Flexibility and cost-reduction are key. Our inbound mining supply solution has many inherent benefits…
Central Consolidation Centre (JHB & CT)
Being positioned close to the supplier base facilitates rapid response to orders. These cost-effective cross-docking facilities enable consolidation for long-haul delivery either directly to mines or to the regional cross-docks/warehouses, and from there, short haul or personal express delivery to the mines or mine shafts.
As the consolidation centre is shared by suppliers and mining houses, costs are greatly reduced. Further, transport to regional cross-docks/warehouses is more frequent and cost-effective due to the consolidation of both mining house and supplier deliveries.
Suppliers no longer need to worry about making deliveries direct to mines and complying with strict security measures – resulting in lengthy lead times and costly driver training. Inventory can reach the mines more rapidly from our conveniently located regional cross-docks/warehouses, improving speed and reactivity for suppliers while, for the mines, reducing the number and cost of deliveries, shortening lead times and increasing safety compliance. Emergency parcel delivery services also stem from here. For those who want to speed up reaction time to mining demand, suppliers are able to utilise our regionally based shared warehouse facilities and sales offices.
Combining our capabilities and our network of facilities enables us to offer both mining companies and their suppliers holistic supply chain solutions that generate value and positively impact on the bottom line of all participants.
